Balduin is reckless, young and talented yet penniless. The countess Margit ignores his advancing endeavours; on the other hand Balduin spurns the affections of Gena by forfeiting her love. The devil is bored by the alliance. Promising him fame, money and the fulfilment of his love the devil tricks Balduin into selling him his mirror image. A plan which seems to be working in Balduin’s favour until his reflection starts to develop a life of its own, which brings Balduin to even greater difficulties by causing him further and larger problems. He realizes too late that he has fallen victim to an ingenious plan.
